Happy First Anniversary Maine Brewshed Alliance!

Note: This was an online celebration.

Now, more than ever during these troubling times, we should look for opportunities to remind ourselves of our valuable community and of what we can accomplish together.

Today, we want to take a moment to recognize the one-year anniversary of an exciting collaboration we launched last year with Maine’s craft brewers. On March 27, 2019, 13 Maine breweries and the Natural Resources Council of Maine came together to create the Maine Brewshed Alliance with the goal of leveraging the power of partnerships to protect the waterways that make our state a great place to live, work, brew, and enjoy great beer.

Conservation Celebration with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree

Join us on Monday, September 16th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Hidden Cove Brewery in Wells to thank Congresswoman Pingree for her leadership in supporting the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has conserved land and created outdoor recreation opportunities in every county across the country – including iconic public lands in Maine like Acadia National Park, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, and Sebago Lake. Despite this, the program has been chronically underfunded, and has only received its full funding amount twice in its 54-year history. Congresswoman Pingree has been a tireless advocate for the program and has paved the way for a bill to ensure permanent, full funding. Come join us to thank her for her support and ask for her help getting the bill over the finish line!

Cash bar, light refreshments will be served.

Side By Each Special Beer Release!

Side By Each Special Beer Release!

Join us at Side By Each Brewing Company as they release their special watershed brew in support of Lake Auburn, which provides drinking water and water used for brewing to the Lewiston-Auburn area.

What: Special beer release of a Mexican Lager called "Lago Castaño" (Spanish for "Lake Auburn")
Date: Thursday, September 5th
Time: 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Location: Side By Each Brewing Company, 1110 Minot Ave, Auburn, ME 04210
RSVP at the Facebook event here.

The average beer is more than 90 percent water, and the characteristics of the local water supply, like the pH, mineral content, and purity, are central to the quality of each brew. Lake Auburn is one of the cleanest sources of drinking water in the country—so clean that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted the Auburn Water District and City of Lewiston Water Division a waiver from filtration. This allows the two agencies to keep costs down for their customers. But to keep this waiver, the water quality must remain exceptional.

The Maine Brewshed Alliance and Lake Auburn Watershed Protection Commission will be there to talk more about the importance of clean water in the brewing process, efforts to keep our water clean, and how you can be involved.

National Drinking Water Week

National Drinking Water Week

We’re excited to support our partner, Sebago Clean Waters, in their brewery collaborative for national drinking water week. See below for more info, and find a full schedule of offerings at participating breweries here.

Visit a local brewery to learn about the connection between forests, water, and beer

Much of the land that drains to Sebago Lake is covered with forest.  These forests act as a filter, naturally producing exceptional water quality. Yet only 10% of this forest is conserved – meaning development could eventually cause lower water quality and higher water treatment costs.  A new effort called Sebago Clean Waters (SCW) is underway, linking the community to forest conservation – to protect our water, wildlife, and way of life.

Dozens of local breweries rely on this water, too. Beer is 90% water; delicious beer begins with outstanding water. Select Maine Brewshed Alliance members are collaborating with PWD, SCW, and Loon Echo Land Trust to provide beautiful slideshows and information in tasting rooms at various times throughout the week. Staff from these organizations will be available to answer questions at some locations.
